THE NINE MOUSAI
(九缪斯)
Goddesses of music, song and dance and the source of inspiration to poets.
As the patrons of literature they were also the goddesses of knowlege who knew of all things that came to pass. Later the nine Mousai became “goddesses of liberal arts and sciences”(自由—通识学艺之守护神女), and each was assigned a specific sphere.
The mother of the Mousai was the Titanis Mnemosyne(记忆女神), who was sometimes numbered as one of three elder Mousai.
The nine were depicted as beautiful young women holding various musical instruments and attributes.

【8】“The human world is indeed a sick thing… [T]he health heroes are rare, and God provides them at dear price. Still, the world must be ruled, if men are not to become wild beast. So things in the world in general remain mere patchwork and beggary; it is a veritable hospital.” 马丁·路德,《赞美诗第101篇疏义》(Martin Luther, Commentary on Psalm 101);比较柏拉图《法律篇》853b-854a。
