Britannica 5
Gibran,Kahlil(Gibran also spelled Jubran,Kahlil also spelled Khalil, Arabic name in full Jubran Khalil Jubran)
(b.Jan 6 1883 in Bsharri, Lebanon-d.Apr 10.1931 in New York,NY)
Lebanese-American Philosophical essayist, novelist, poet and artist.
Having received his primary education in Beirut,Gibran immigrated with his parents to Boston in 1895. He returned to Lebanon in 1898 and studied in Beirut, where he excelled in the Arabic Language. On his return in 1903 he published his first literacy essays and met Mary Haskell, who was to be the benefactor of all his life. (注意这里没有提到巴黎)In 1912 Gibran settled down in New York City and devoted himself to writing literacy essays and short stories, both in Arabic and in English, and to painting.
Gibran's literacy and Artistic output is highly romantic in outlook and was influenced by the Bible, Friedrich Nietzsche and William Blake. His writings in both languages, which deal with such themes as love, death nature and a longing for the homeland, are full of lyrical outpourings and are expressive of Gibran's deeply religious and mystic nature.
Works in Arabic
Al-Muruj(1910, Nymph of the Valley)
Dam'ah waWatisamah(1914: A Tear and a smile)
Al-Arwah al-Mutamarridah(1920: Spirits rebellious)
Al-Ajmhah al-Mutakassirah(1922: The Broken Wings)
Al-Awasif(1923:The Storms)
and Al-Mawakib(1923:The Procession)
Works in English
The Madman(1918)
The Forerunner(1920)
The Prophet(1923)
Sand and Foam(1926)
Jesus the Son of Man(1928)
……Gibran's Writings teach a philosophy of universe peace and religious tolerance based on a spirit of love that transcends culture differences......he wrote in Arabic until 1918(Mary Elizabeth Haskell Is Not Mentioned Here), when he began writing in English. The Publication of the Prophet (1923)established his fame in English-Speaking countries. It is a mystical poem that explores the importance of love. Gibran also wrote fictions and non-fictions
......and, at 15 years of age, entered the Maronite School in Beirut. Later, he studied painting in Paris(Not Mentioned in Britannica). In 1912, Gibran moved to NY, where he lived until his death. Gibran's multicultural upbringing greatly influenced his writing.
Americana 12
Gibran's sister supported him while he worked at painting and writing(Mary Elizabeth Haskell Is Not Mentioned Here)
……But it is for the Prophet that he is best-known. Published in 1923, with illustratons by the author, The Prophet was a best seller and has been translated into more than 20 languanges.
A series of 28 related prose poems, the book touches on such topics as love, freedom, prayer and death. Gibran's mysticism evident here as in all his works, reveals an intense preoccupation with the spiritual visionary……(完了……
