Hess and Walter first appeared together at a 1932 New York Philharmonic Symphony performance of the Brahms D Minor Concerto. Their last joint venture was what turned out to be Walter's last "official" concert with the Philharmonic, in February 1957. During the intermission of that program. Hess presented Walter with a first edition of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony and praised him in a short speech as "the most dearly beloved of all the musicians in the world."
