Then a damp gust/Bringing rain”。 在赵梦蕤女士的《荒原》译本是这样翻译的：“刷的来了一炷闪电。然后是一阵湿风/带来了雨”。但如是结合《荒原》整首诗，可以看出，尽管诗人一再的诉说荒原干涸的痛苦并呼唤雨的到来，但是直到诗歌的最后，雨并没下，荒原也没有得到救赎。因此，如是翻译成“刷的来了一炷闪电。然后是一阵湿风/带来了雨”，这就意味着雨最后是下了的，这就与原文的整体思想不符合。所以“bringing rain”是否是用来修饰“a damp gust”的？如是这样，将此句译成“可以带来雨的湿风”，而不是“湿风带来了雨”，是不是更为恰当一些，望大方之家能提出意见。作者: 八和九生 时间: 2007-8-28 20:50

knifeling 与韩波的意见颇为相近，我最近也在读Eliot，不妨再为大家提供一种理解。这场雨还没有下，闪电过后湿云却携来了雨，而本一段是长诗临近末段的部分，这场雨是是不是预示“将要”下？它或许象征着某种“胜利”（case of success）：
The narrator tells how paradise is attainable. Success is dependent on being under the influence of some 'divine' inspiration- perhaps the god Dionysys, perhaps opium-in any case the narrator seems to the reader to be suffering some kind of apparent madness. In 'The Waste Land' the paragraph beginning with 'in this decayed hole...' concludes with 'In a flash of lightening. Then a damp gust / Bringing rain.' (lines 393-94)Here, too, we have a case of success. The flash of lightening opens the way to putting an end to the waste land just as 'Kubla Khan's narrator's flashing eyes signal the revelation of the secret for attaining paradise.

按这样的观点，后文“black clouds Gathered far distant, over Himavant”也是一种暗示。
《荒原》有意思的正在于此，它提供无数的影象，但你很难分辨，哪些是虚幻，哪些是实在的景色，而诗人并没有说出“不”。所以与你所说的有些不同的是，这里尽管诗人一再“诉说荒原干涸的痛苦并呼唤雨的到来”，但直到诗歌的最后，我们仍不知道雨下没下，荒原到底“有没有”得到救赎。一切在诗中都是不明白的，没有结果的，而不是单纯的否定。
而“雷霆”明知读者正关心着结局，后文却又开始谈起其它的事。好像它丝毫不关心荒原有没有得到救赎。

比如下面这本书的解释，就不是很妥当。因为单从诗里根本看不出一种“回答”或是“宣告”。因为雨根本还没有下。
